Ins & Outs of shaft sealing

Ins & Outs of shaft sealing

Stuart Bulbeck

Gland packing refers to a type of sealing mechanism that is used to prevent leaks in mechanical equipment, such as pumps and valves. It consists of braided or twisted strands of material, such as GRAPHITE, PTFE, or other synthetic fibers, which are wrapped around a shaft or valve stem and compressed to create a seal.

Graphite Packing

The purpose of gland packing is to provide a flexible and adjustable seal that can accommodate tiny amounts of shaft or stem movement while preventing fluid leakage. The packing material is typically lubricated with a fluid, such as water or oil, to reduce friction and heat buildup.

Gland Packing

Gland packing is commonly used in applications where high pressure or elevated temperature fluids are present, as well as in situations where the equipment is exposed to harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. However, it does require periodic maintenance to ensure that it continues to function properly and prevent leaks.
