How to Choose the Correct Stove Rope Size for Your Wood Burner
Replacing a worn stove rope might seem straightforward, but one of the most common questions we hear is:
“What size stove rope do I need?”
Stove rope is available in several diameters, and choosing the correct size is important. A rope that's too small may not create the intended seal, while one that's too large can make the stove door difficult to close.
In this guide, we'll explain how stove rope is measured, the common sizes available and what to check before ordering a replacement.
What is stove rope used for?
Stove rope is a heat-resistant sealing material commonly found around the doors of wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and other high-temperature appliances.
When the door closes, the rope compresses to help create a seal between the door and stove body.
Over time, repeated heating, cooling and compression can cause the rope to flatten, harden or deteriorate.
That's when replacement may become necessary.
What sizes does stove rope come in?
Stove rope is available in several diameters.
Common sizes include:
- 6mm
- 8mm
- 10mm
- 12mm
Other sizes are also available depending on the particular appliance and application.
The important thing is not to assume that one size fits every stove.
Can I measure my old stove rope?
You can use your existing rope as a starting point, but there's a catch.
Old stove rope becomes compressed over time.
A rope that was originally 10mm in diameter may therefore appear considerably smaller after years of being compressed between the stove door and body.
If you're measuring an existing rope, try to find a section that hasn't been heavily compressed.
A digital or Vernier caliper can make this easier.
How Much Stove Rope Do I Need?
Measure around the entire channel where the rope will sit.
For a rectangular stove door:
(Width × 2) + (Height × 2) = approximate rope length

| 500mm × 400mm | (500 × 2) + (400 × 2) | 1.8m |

Check your stove manufacturer's specification
Where possible, this should be your first step.
Look for the make and model of your stove and check the manufacturer's instructions or replacement-part information.
If the manufacturer specifies a particular rope diameter or seal type, use this information when selecting a replacement.
What happens if my stove rope is too small?
A rope that's too small may not compress sufficiently when the door closes.
This could prevent the seal from performing as intended.
If you've recently replaced a rope and the door doesn't appear to seal correctly, check that the replacement rope matches the specification for your appliance.
What happens if my stove rope is too big?
Bigger isn't necessarily better.
An oversized rope can make the stove door difficult to close or prevent it from seating correctly.
Don't force a stove door closed against an obviously oversized replacement rope.
Don't forget the adhesive
Many stove rope installations also require a suitable high-temperature stove rope adhesive to secure the replacement rope into its channel.
Ordinary household glue isn't intended for the temperatures experienced around a stove, so use an adhesive specifically designed for the application.
